In January 2011, the Harvard Business Review published an article titled, How to fix capitalism. The authors, Mark Kramer and Michael Porter, proposed a plan to “reinvent capitalism and unleash a wave of innovation and growth”.

For those of us already working on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and social impact, the article’s central tenets made sense. Not all profits are equal. Profits achieved from pursuing a social purpose meet economic and societal needs. This creates a positive cycle of company and community prosperity, represented in part by a more resilient and expanding consumer base. The outcome for a company is sustained, scalable growth from product and service innovation, improvements along the value chain and closer, mutually beneficial relationships between community organisations and government.
